Project Description:
Columbia University was founded in 1754 as King's College by royal charter of King George II of England.  It is the oldest institution of higher learnings in the state of New York and the fifth oldest in the United States.  The main campus is located on 32.6 acres in the Morningside Heights section of Manhattan.

Dome-Tech Energy Engineering was selected by Columbia University to perform an energy audit of 31 buildings totaling over 4 million sf at its Morningside campus in New York City.  Rising energy costs and a desire to investigate Energy Conservation Opportunities (ECOs) were the primary drivers for conducting this audit.

Based on their knowledge and experience with state and federal incentive programs, Dome-Tech was able to secure NYSERDA funding totaling 50% of the project cost.  Early success with the project prompted Columbia to award Dome-Tech with an additional energy audit totaling 1.3 million sf at the Morningside campus.

n addition to investigating the traditional energy conservation opportunities associated with mechanical systems, HVAC and lighting, the enrgy engineers reviewed the potential for distributed generation projects using new energy technologies.  Project screenings included a rooftop photovoltaic system, a 200kW fuel cell project and various microturbine applications.

The final report included a list of ECOs.  Each ECO was prioritized according to Columbia University's economic evaluation criteria and the report was used to support the deveopment of a capital budgeting plan.
