Dome-Tech Energy Engineers conducted a technical and economic screening study for installing a microturbine in the Johnson Learning Center (JLC) at Middlesex County College's Edison, New Jersey campus. The study included a review of state and local incentive programs. Since microturbine equipment is categorized as a combined heat and power (CHP) technology, incentive funding was available for this type of project.
Based on gas usage data provided by MCC and the calculated thermal load of the Johnson Learning Center, an economic analysis was performed for the installation of an Ingersoll-Rand 250 Series microturbine that would serve the JLC building and the central heating loop. While the thermal load output of the microturbine, excess hot water production could be sent to the central hot water loop even in the summer. Gas usage data show s that the minimum average summer hot water load is 1,243,000 btu/hr. AT current utility rates and assuming CHP incentives are received, this project produces a 6.5 year simple payback.
In addition to providing attractive economics, implementation of microturbine projects allow for quiet on-site power, thermal energy production, increased power system reliability and low emissions.
